The proliferation of digital transformation and technological innovation in manufacturing has resulted in a more efficient and effective realization process for engineering design. The increased flexibility and agility of manufacturing processes brought by the ongoing cyber-physical digitalization enables the production of products with ‘lot-size-one’ and ‘mass production costs.’ Meanwhile, emerging manufacturing principles and processes, e.g., additive/hybrid manufacturing and extreme manufacturing, offer unparalleled freedom to explore novel design concepts featuring high-performance, functional integrated, multi-material, and embedded intelligence. These advancements in manufacturing necessitate new design methodologies and tools that incorporate manufacturing opportunities and constraints for product innovations with improved productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction. Early attempts encompass a wide spectrum of activities, including new design for manufacturing guidelines/frameworks, computational design workflow, and artificial intelligence-assisted design automation. Hence, this special issue focuses on cutting-edge research of design innovation for advanced manufacturing technologies. The goal is to bring together the research community into a common forum for identifying key challenges and opportunities, sharing cutting-edge research, and promoting related design research.

- Design for human-cyber-physical systems in manufacturing
- Design for manufacturing and assembly, including intelligent manufacturing, smart manufacturing
- Design for manufacturable lightweight structures, including topology optimization, multiscale structure design, lattice structure design
- Design for manufacturing-enabled functionalities, including 4D printing, metamaterials, functionally graded materials
- Design of product realisation systems with focus on planning, optimisation, control and management of processes, fulfilment and systems, including manufacturing system design, supply chain design and engineering logistics
- Design for mass customization/personalization, design for changeable and reconfigurable production systems
- Sustainable design and manufacturing for product lifecycle and circular economy, including manufacturability, assembly, production, quality, maintenance, remanufacture, recycling, reuse, end-of-life.
- Digital design, manufacturing, and services, including digital transformation and digital twins for design and manufacturing, design in Industry 4.0 and 5.0
- Crowdsourcing in design and manufacturing, including product-process co-design, manufacturing-as-a-service (MaaS), social manufacturing
