Irish Women’s Writing

The field of Irish women’s writing is a vibrant and varied area of scholarship that extends outwards in many directions and intersects with a range of diverse disciplinary approaches.

This call for papers for the first special issue of Women’s Writing dedicated to Irish writers invites submissions on innovative topics from the medieval period to the late-nineteenth century. We particularly welcome intersectional approaches, considering gender alongside class, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, religion, and age.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Life Writing
  • Cultural responses to medical and scientific developments
  • Transnational and transcultural encounters
  • Nature writing and ecology
  • Publication histories
  • Archipelagic perspectives
  • Women writing women’s bodies
  • Travel writing
  • Collaborative projects and coterie writing
  • Manuscript circulation
  • Fable and folklore
  • Considerations of empire, colonialism and enslavement
  • Correspondence networks
  • Literary and cultural retellings
