Transforming small-scale irrigation systems from dysfunctional to functional climate smart agricultural systems

Over the last ten years a group of researchers from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, South Africa, and Australia has worked on the project Transforming small-scale Irrigation in Southern Africa (TISA). This project has been described and its half way outcomes have been reported in previous special issues in this journal in 2017 and 2020. This special issue will evaluate the extent to which TISA has managed to transform small-scale irrigation schemes from dysfunctional to functional systems and whether this process has increased farmers’ and schemes’ ability to adapt to climate change. We do this in eleven papers analysing project outcomes both at farmer, scheme and national levels but also in cross-cutting papers evaluating impacts on different parameters such as youth and other disadvantaged group and policy implications. In the final paper we explore future research for development opportunities to find the way forward, to bring functional systems into prosperous and adaptive farmers, systems, and communities.
