Advancing Net-Zero and Zero-Energy Buildings: Challenges and Opportunities in Sustainable Design and Operation
The International Journal of Sustainable Energy is pleased to present a special issue featuring articles from the International Conference on the Energy Performance of Buildings. The issue, titled "Roadmaps for NZEBs and ZEBs Between Obligations and Possibilities," will provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in achieving net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs) and zero-energy buildings (ZEBs), as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with their implementation.
The special issue will cover a range of topics, including building energy simulation, building envelope optimization, renewable energy systems, occupant behavior, and regulations and incentives that support NZEBs globally. The articles will showcase the latest advancements and cutting-edge innovations in these areas and highlight the importance of incorporating renewable energy sources into building design to reduce the carbon footprint and promote sustainability.
The papers will showcase fresh modeling approaches, uses, and case studies, highlighting the critical function that simulation performs in maximizing energy efficiency, cutting back on consumption, and achieving sustainability in the built environment. They will also explore the latest strategies, technologies, and best practices for achieving NZEBs, showcasing the efforts of the international community in this regard.
The critical role that building envelope design plays in energy performance will also be highlighted, with innovative materials, thermal insulation, airtightness, and façade systems explored. The articles will showcase creative methods for improving building envelopes for increased energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
Finally, the special issue will examine the intricate connection between occupant behavior and a building's energy efficiency, outlining tactics for encouraging energy-conscious behavior and evaluating the efficacy of various treatments. They will also look at how tenant behavior and preferences might be taken into consideration in building design and operation, highlighting the importance of human factors in achieving sustainable buildings.
Overall, the special issue will provide a roadmap for achieving sustainable buildings in the future, showcasing the latest advancements in building energy simulation, building envelope optimization, renewable energy systems, and occupant behavior. It will highlight the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing NZEBs and ZEBs, and promote a more sustainable built environment.
