Modern Algorithms in Complexity : Modelling and Simulation of Complex Problems

General

Today's world is full of complex processes, relationships, algorithms, structures and causal relationships. Complexity is becoming a part of our everyday lives without us being fully aware of it. It is no longer enough to solve engineering problems with simple procedures and algorithms corresponding to the customs of the last century, but with modern algorithms that allow a full understanding of the complex problem being solved and its solution. This special issue focuses on the problem of complexity from an engineering perspective. However, theoretical contributions are also welcome. The aim of this special issue is to show the latest original and interesting applications of modern technologies and algorithms in solving complex problems and parallel processes. Including their use for the computational operations themselves.

This special issue is organized under the COMPENG conference https://compeng2022.ino.cnr.it/, which is one of the most progressive and interesting conferences on complex systems.

It is concerned with the use of modern engineering algorithms like bioinspired algorithms or unconventional algorithms belonging to the class of swarm intelligence techniques for example. Those algorithms play today an extremely important role in engineering, that if facing many complex problems in its solution. The complexity in engineering can be regarded from two points of view.

The first one is the solution of complex problems such as the travelling salesman, chaos system control and design, real-time plasma reactor control etc. where bioinspired algorithms are able to find optimal or highly acceptable solutions in real-time.

The second one is the complexity of the algorithm's behaviour itself. It has already been reported that chaos and phase transitions have been observed in its dynamics and thus such algorithms as swarm intelligence, artificial neural networks etc. can be classified also as complex systems themselves. Besides such algorithms as cellular automata, fractal geometry, for example.

This special issue is concerned with original research papers discussing new results on and with engineering algorithms in a complex world, as well as it's novel improvements tested on widely accepted test problems.

Scope and Topics:

The proposed special issue aims to bring together the latest research on various applications, development and hybridization of engineering algorithms applied to complex systems. It will facilitate knowledge exchange, technical discussions, and networking on topics of interest that include, but are not limited to:

  • Application of the modern engineering algorithms on complex systems:
  • Complex system control
  • Complex system design
  • Identification of the complex regimes inside systems (e.g. hidden attractors)
  • Engineering optimization as the complex problem
  • Chaos and fractals
  • Agents
  • Complex networks
  • Non-trivial collective behaviour
  • Complex behaviour of the algorithm (i.e. chaos, phase transitions, edge of chaos… ):
  • Swarm intelligence
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Artificial neural networks
  • Cellular automata and artificial life
  • Swarm robotic
