Transparent Human-Agent Communications
As intelligent agents (robots and software agents) become more sophisticated, transparency has become a hot topic in recent years and has been identified by Government agencies (e.g., guidelines published by the EU in early 2020) as a top requirement for high-stake AI systems such as medical, military, financial, and legal systems. Increasingly, efforts are focused on making AI’s output more transparent in order to maximize the joint performance of the human-machine team. Significant advancements in AI in recent years have enabled machines’ real-time explanations (e.g., regarding their behaviors, intents, reasoning process, and projected outcomes) to their human partners. However, because of complexities in dynamic tasking environments, it remains a challenge for human-computer interaction researchers and practitioners to design effective human-machine interfaces to support robust and efficient human-agent communications. The aim of this special issue is to showcase state-of-the-art research on transparent human-agent communications as well as identify research gaps and potential ways forward. Appropriate submissions include empirical studies, theories, and overviews of methodological advances.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Agent transparency: theoretical issues
- Transparency in human-agent communication: system and user interface designs
- Transparent human-agent interfaces to support humans’ trust, situation awareness, and workload
- Explainable AI: HCI issues and designs
