Innovative Learning Environments

It is becoming even more clear, accelerated by the effects of the pandemic, that innovative learning environments should be designed and explored to satisfy the needs of education in the 21st Century. One of the directions of such innovative learning environments is to reintroduce or foster creativity in teaching and learning at all levels of education. Another purpose of such innovative environments is to scaffold or support connecting disciplines, or in other words, promote transdisciplinarity in schooling. According to the aims of the Journal of Mathematics and the Arts (JMA), the recognition of the Arts, in a broader sense of creating and designing, could be fruitful ground to design innovative learning environments furthering the integration of creativity and transdisciplinarity in education. In addition, Arts and its connection with mathematics and other disciplines, currently considered as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) could be one of the leading threads for papers submitted in this JMA special issue. Therefore, we are interested in receiving papers representing, e.g. innovative learning approaches; unconventional ways of using emerging learning technologies; designs of creative and transdisciplinary learning spaces, including physical and virtual spaces;  and descriptions of the importance of arts to creativity. Contributions considered are original - empirical research, case studies, conceptual articles, and artists’ statements. Adequate theoretical background and a carefully selected methodological approach are expected in every paper. Authors are also encouraged to outline innovative approaches in their research design, design realization, and manuscript presentation. It is also expected that authors prepare abstracts innovatively – in the forms of images, video-audio materials, graphics, infographics, etc. In a preparation for this special issue, we will be led by the attitude ‘When seeking creativity, we must be open to it and break out expected patterns’. In sum, in this JMA special issue, we hope to capture the state-of-the-art, present and future opportunities for innovative learning environments, presented in a creative and innovative style.
