Initial Teacher Education
We invite contributions to a special issue of English in Education on Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in English.
At a time when the profession is under ever increasing pressure in England and elsewhere, for reasons including a recruitment and retention crisis and curriculum and policy change, this special issue will address the challenges and rewards of teaching English specific to Initial Teacher Education.
We invite research or conceptual articles (c. 4000-6000 words, including references) and shorter reflective and/or creative pieces on any aspect of initial teacher education in English (up to 2000 words). We would particularly welcome international perspectives on ITE and a range of voices.
This list of possible topics is merely indicative: we welcome the novel and unexpected.
- Good practice in ITE across the subject (including spoken English, reading, writing, literacy, media literacy and drama; and the use of technology within these)
2. Framing the subject and the role: how is the identity of a beginning teacher of English forged and fostered?
3. Lessons from the past and how they might inform ITE in English in the future
4. How ITE in English addresses curriculum change and/or policy change, locally and nationally
5. ITE in English context(s), including the intersection between ITE in university and schools; the affordances and challenges of different models of ITE in English
6. ITE in English for non-recent graduates and those opting for teaching as a second or subsequent career
7. Creative approaches to school-based mentoring of beginning teachers of English
8. How beginning teachers of English are best prepared to adapt their practice to include all pupils
9. How beginning teachers of English, including those from diverse backgrounds, are supported to work with pupils from diverse backgrounds
10. How beginning teachers of English understand and navigate transition between phases (such as key stage 2 to key stage 3 and key stage 4 to A level in England) and how they are prepared for Further Education contexts.
