Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology to Support Aging

Advances in information technology have led to new tools and systems that can support healthy older adults, with the ultimate goal to facilitate aging in place and independence, or adults experiencing cognitive and functional decline (e.g., due to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias). Artificial intelligence introduces new ways to optimize care management and health outcomes; however, as with any innovative or disruptive tool, technical, clinical and ethical challenges are introduced.

In this Special Issue we want to assemble articles that describe design, development, implementation and evaluation of AI tools and other information technology for aging, as well as critical exploration of ethical and policy issues associated with the introduction of technology in gerontology.

More specifically, we invite articles that examine a broad spectrum of issues such as the use of AI tools and other information technology to facilitate aging in place, and how to make AI in aging and care management trustworthy.  Studies might also describe the design and testing of AI algorithms to detect risk and prevent adverse events, medication interactions or non-adherence, functional or cognitive decline, nutritional deficits, sleep disruption, financial security threats, social isolation and loneliness, or other geriatric syndromes. Additionally, we invite manuscripts that focus on the development and deployment of decision support tools to assist older adults, family caregivers and health care providers in shared decision making regarding healthy aging, chronic illness management, financial security, palliative care, end of life planning or transitions in care and living arrangements. We also seek end user evaluations of AI and other technologies, and papers that discuss ethical and policy implications of the use of AI and other technologies in aging, issues of bias and health inequity, diagnostic excellence, regulation and transparency, clinical workflow and the role of technology in supporting older adults and other stakeholders in rural areas and among underserved populations.
