Identity as Resistance
Identity: An International Journal of Theory and Research welcomes submissions for a special issue on “Identity as Resistance”.
For this special issue, we are seeking work that recognizes and examines the intertwined nature of individuals and our sociopolitical environments. Specifically, we aim to bring together research on identity as a means, result, and possible path of resistance to systemic oppression, in particular in the current context.
The body of work gathered in this special issue should highlight and explore the diverse ways that individuals experience, make sense of, and push against various forms of societal inequity as they navigate and develop their identities. Submissions can focus on identity or the self across domains and social locations, including but not limited to race and ethnicity, religion, immigration, sexuality, gender, and ability.
Although all methods are welcome, we are particularly interested in research that takes a critical, participatory, and/or community-oriented lens, drawing on any type of qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approach. In addition to empirical studies, we welcome theoretical and conceptual submissions focused on how identity scholars might shift our methods, approaches, or frameworks to foster greater research on identity as resistance. Across submission types, we encourage work anchored in sociopolitical context.
We welcome submissions from across subdisciplines of psychology (e.g., clinical, community, counseling, developmental, educational, social, organizational) as well as adjacent fields (e.g., anthropology, education, family studies, sociology). Regardless of study design or method, we recommend including a stated consideration of guiding onto-epistemological paradigms as well as a reflection on how authors’ positionality shapes their work.
