Human-Computer Interaction for Intelligent Transportation Systems

The transportation system has progressed throughout the years and it has become an essential and significant part of people’s life. From government to commercial, bus, train, trucks, containers, etc. plays a vital role in commuting people, delivering materials and distributing any type of products. New technological advances in science have brought a substantial change in the quality of transportation and have set up many opportunities for improvement in the sectors of tourism and trade. The intelligent transport system (ITS) makes use of the traffic network, policies, and regulations to provide innovative services smartly.  Transportation systems handle applications from the basics to advanced management of materials adequately. It improves the performance of the transportation systems in the form of efficient traffic management, mobility, and road transport. Some technologies involved in the ITS can be mentioned as automatic recognition of speeding vehicles, number plate recognition, parking management, surveillance cameras, weather report, etc.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) focuses on the study of the design and relation of human and computer activities. It has been around for years and performed well in many service-based industries. It helps in discovering the methods and techniques for aiding users for effective user interaction, usability, and user experience. HCI acts as a support to accomplish human-computer activities and is applied in various applications such as air traffic control, computer gaming, intelligence analysis, and many others. Humans and computers interact through a user interface which includes software and hardware. Moreover HCI is very popular in the service industries, where user interface should be feasible to become efficient. By implementing HCI in an intelligent transportation system, various types of information can be easily obtained. It might be related to the availability of public transport, traffic congestion in routes, and any road or vehicle accidents. Such information can help in improving road safety and reducing environmental impact. For car drivers, HCI can assist with collision warning, autonomous driving, traffic congestion indication, etc.

In general, Human-computer interaction plays a key role in enhancing situational awareness and supporting decision-making processes. SinceHuman-Computer Interaction is an innovative topic of research and has been explored for years in the service industries and with the facilitation of HCI, an intelligent transport system will be a fascinating area of research.
