Automated Vehicle Acceptance

One important factor for a large-scale implementation of automated vehicles on public roads is their acceptance by the general public and consumers. The examination of automated vehicle acceptance has grown tremendously in the past few years. Studies have revealed that public acceptance is a function of a range of factors, such as domain-specific, emotional-affective and moral-normative factors. Only a smaller group of early technology-savvy adopters are currently using these vehicles, while the general population does not. Furthermore, automated driving has received excessive attention in the media and marketing campaigns, which has contributed to unrealistic and false expectations of the capabilities and limitations of automated vehicles. Calibrating the beliefs about this technology and educating and training the public is important to establish user acceptance and realize the benefits of road vehicle automation.

We therefore call for papers addressing automated vehicle acceptance. Topics and themes for the special issue include (but are not limited to):

(1) Conceptualization & measurement of acceptance

(2) Theoretical models & factors impacting automated vehicle acceptance

(3) Individual- and vehicle-based differences in acceptance

(4) Public understanding, education & training

(5) Technology, engineering, and HCI-related contributing factors to user non-acceptance

(6) Debate and controversy of current automated vehicle acceptance research
