Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence: Concepts, Methods and Applications
Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) is a way of approaching AI by putting people first. HCAI seeks to augment human capabilities while maintaining human control over AI systems, by considering the necessity, context, and ethical and legal conditions of the AI system as well as promoting individual, community, and societal well-being. HCAI emphasizes aligning the intended purposes and performance goals of AI systems with human needs and values. Equally important is understanding the properties such systems must demonstrate to engage users effectively and earn societal trust.
As AI technologies continue to advance rapidly, it is crucial to advance the conceptual understanding around HCAI, share empirical experiences and propose actionable methodological approaches. For this Special Issue we invite submissions from a variety of backgrounds: human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, information systems research, design, social sciences and related fields. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Critical examination and refinement of HCAI concepts, frameworks and typologies
- Assessment and advancement of human-centered design methods for AI contexts
- Evaluation of stakeholder involvement approaches in responsible AI development
- Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the impacts of AI technologies on individuals, groups and society
- Approaches for addressing fairness, accountability, transparency and ethics throughout the AI lifecycle
- User and public understanding, perception and acceptance of AI and efforts to enhance comprehension
- Methods for explicating AI models to foster meaningful interaction and build user trust
- The creation and evaluation of AI tools to augment human capabilities.
- Theoretical advances in understanding the cognitive and social processes involved in human-AI interactions
- Improve our understanding of how to use AI to support human-human collaboration, community efforts, and collective intelligence, going beyond human/AI collaborations.
- Emerging issues and opportunities in AI governance, accountability and control
- Applications of HCAI approaches across domains like healthcare, education, marketing and beyond
- Future visions and research roadmaps for HCAI
