The physical and psychological health of dance teachers and their students has been an ever-present topic of concern in dance education. Dance teachers and students often engage for many hours of strenuous physical, mental, and emotional activity during the day—such as taking or teaching technique and other movement classes, participating in cross-training activities (at a gym and elsewhere), working on curriculum planning or attending academic classes, and mentoring students, colleagues, and peers—followed by evening rehearsals. They need ways to sustain their stamina, stay healthy, and avoid injury. Also, maintaining motivation and a positive attitude can be challenging in the face of both internal and external pressures.

Dance educators often face high degrees of physical, emotional, and mental stress as they engage beyond their obligations for teaching, choreographing, performing, administrating, and advocating. They endeavor to live lives that balance teaching, creative work/scholarship, and family/community obligations. They strive to guide their students—of all ages—toward psychological and physical health. And as teachers strive to educate themselves about how the human body and brain function, they reinvigorate their pedagogy. In this era of a global pandemic and increased awareness of the experiences and trauma of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students, dance educators and their students navigate best practices in teaching and learning.

Key Questions addressed by the Special Issue include:
1. What responsibilities do dance educators have in ensuring and advocating the physical and psychological health of their students?
2. How does prioritizing physical and psychological health influence the ways in which dance is taught?
3. What is the relationship between psychological stress and physical injury?
4. How are dance teachers facilitating their own psychological and physical health?
5. In what ways has Covid-19 impacted dancers’ and teachers’ psychological and physical health?
6. How are dance programs (PK-12, post-secondary, independent studio, community, etc.) addressing issues of physical and psychological health?
7. What are the physiological, biomechanical, and psychological considerations of dance practice?

Areas to consider may include, but are not limited to:

1. Issues of body image, competition, self-criticism, performance anxiety, and perfectionism among dance students
2. Developing dancers’ self-confidence and self-compassion
3. Psychological welfare of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students and teachers
4. Understanding the effects of over-training, diet, and sleep on psychological and physical health
5. Application of anatomical and physiological principles to reduce dance injuries
6. Application of principles of fitness, rest and recovery, and teaching progressions to reduce dance injuries
7. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and pressures to succeed
8. Prevention and treatment of injuries (physical, mental, emotional)
9. Working with pain
10. Creating a physically and psychologically safe and supportive dance environment

Only finished articles will be considered. Articles may be one of three types: Student Readings: Centering the writing for reading by a specific student population, inclusive of middle school, high school, undergraduate, graduate, and adult students (1,000-3,000 words inclusive of references and endnotes); In Practice Articles: Presenting applied research and practices relevant to the daily of lives of dance teachers, administrators, and advocates in their site of practice (1,500-3,000 words inclusive of references and endnotes); Feature Articles: Focusing on either a current research investigation, or a review of current scholarship on a current topic or of a practice (4,000-6,000 words inclusive of references and endnotes).
