HCI on the Modern Flight Deck
There has been significant growth in the technology available to pilots on the modern aviation flight deck. From information systems to automation to communication technology, pilots now have a range of high-tech systems at their fingertips. This includes technology to help maintain situation awareness, provide support in complex decision-making, allow more efficient communications, and assist in flying the aircraft. For example, Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications on mobile devices now provide pilots with a broad range of information related to weather, traffic and navigation to supplement information provided by certified systems within the aircraft panel. Communication platforms are now moving beyond traditional radio communication to text-based communications. Automated systems are increasingly controlling several aspects of the piloting task with the aim of improving aircraft performance, efficiency and safety. Each of these technological advancements have HCI considerations that warrant exploration. Although recent accidents, such as those involving the Boeing 737 Max, have brought several HCI issues on the flight deck to light, there remain numerous HCI successes that allow aviation to remain one of the safest modes of transportation. This special issue aims to bring together research findings and best practices from academia and industry in order to (a) highlight the significant progress that has been made, (b) shed light on areas still in need of improvement, and (c) propose solutions for maintaining effective human-computer interaction on the flight deck. The relevant topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Usability of flight deck systems
- Emerging flight deck interface technology
- Integrated flight deck displays
- Mode complexity and confusion
- Information presentation on the flight deck
- EFB application design and evaluation
- Automated system visibility, transparency and complexity
- Trust in automation and flight deck systems
- Human Machine Teaming on the flight deck
- Prioritization of flight deck warnings and alerts
- Technology impact on pilot startle and surprise
- EFB utilization on the flight deck
- Data comm and text-based communication technology
- Technology implications for single-pilot operations
