Gut microbiome and drug metabolism

The role of the gut microbiome in the metabolism and transformation of drugs and xenobiotics, as well as its influence on host metabolic and transport pathways, is an area of growing interest and rapid scientific advancement. As our understanding of these interactions continues to expand, new opportunities are emerging in personalised prescribing, improving drug response and efficacy, and reducing drug and xenobiotic toxicity, particularly with the support of modelling, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

This Special Focus, edited by Professor Niall Hyland and Professor Gerard Clarke from APC Microbiome Ireland, University College Cork, invites a broad range of submissions that offer new insights into interactions between drugs, xenobiotics, and the gut microbiome, including the influence of the microbiome on host drug and xenobiotic metabolism.

Submission Instructions

We welcome submissions applying in silico, in vitro, and in vivo approaches that advance both fundamental and clinical understanding in this field. Original research papers, review articles, and commentaries relevant to the theme of this Special Focus are encouraged.
