The gut microbiota and pain

Chronic pain, including abdominal pain, is one of the major treatment challenges faced by physicians and gastroenterologists. The opioid crises and the rapidly expanding use of cannabinoids highlight the urgent need for new analgesics that target pathogenic mechanisms and mitigate side effects. Exciting new data has strongly implicated microbe-host interactions in the pain underlying common disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome but there is still much to be learned. In this special issue we accept articles that investigate:

  • Mechanisms of somatic and visceral pain modulated by microbes
  • Microbiome-neuro-immune interactions
  • Preclinical models and clinical issues related to microbial regulation of pain
  • Novel biotherapeutic approaches that target pain and neuro-immune pathways
