Global Diversity in Psychotrauma Research
Psychotrauma is a global health concern, yet most research originates from and is focuses on WEIRD settings and populations. This geographical and cultural imbalance raises important questions about the universality of trauma constructs, the contextual relevance of diagnostic tools, and the effectiveness of interventions in diverse global contexts. As global crises, armed conflicts, forced displacement and climate-related disasters increasingly impact populations worldwide, it is imperative to better understand how traumatic stress is experienced, expressed and treated across cultural, social, and geographical settings.
Diversity in psychotrauma research includes – but is not limited to – cultural background, gender, sexual preference, religion and socioeconomic status. How do cultural beliefs shape the perception and expression of trauma-related symptoms? What are the implications of working with Western-centric diagnostic frameworks in non-Western settings? How can trauma research and care be adapted to better reflect and serve diverse communities around the world?
This special issue seeks to showcase innovative and inclusive research that contributes to fair, context-sensitive trauma research and care. We welcome research focused on diversity across countries, in non-western settings specifically and research focused on diversity within western settings.
European Journal of Psychotraumatology and its guest editor invite original research papers (qualitative and quantitative), review articles, research articles, research letters, and clinical practice articles addressing global diversity in psychotrauma on the following topics:
- Phenomenology and correlates of exposure to trauma.
- Experiences of forced displacement, discrimination and gender-based violence.
- Neurobiological sequelae of traumatic exposure.
- Measurement of trauma-related disorders.
- Screening for trauma-related disorders.
- Coping and healing following traumatic exposure.
- Prevention and treatment of psychopathology including community-based and culturally-adapted interventions.
- Trauma-informed care in humanitarian, refugee and conflict settings.
