Geoscience Digital Ecosystems

In a Digitally Transformed society, all the economic, industrial, and research sectors are fastly moving from the data-exchange paradigm to the cyber-physical one, which builds on the concept of resource-as-a-service. Today, new interaction patterns (notably, one) have left their usual scope (notably, the Digital Twin pattern and the manufacturing industry) and are now more and more applied in many other societal sectors, including the Earth and the Sustainable Development Goal sciences. This revolution builds on a new value chain and interoperability model: the “Geoscience Digital Ecosystem”. A “Geosciences Digital Ecosystem” is a digital ecosystem whose functional utility is the generation and sharing of knowledge on the Earth. From an engineering point of view, a “Geosciences Digital Ecosystem” can be defined as a system of systems that applies the digital ecosystem paradigm to model the complex collaborative and competitive social domain dealing with the generation of knowledge on the Earth planet.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • The Digital Transformation of Earth sciences.
  • Moving Earth sciences from the traditional data-exchange paradigm to the cyber-physical world.
  • Innovative stakeholder’s interaction patterns in the Earth sciences domain –including geospatial Digital twins.
  • System of systems that applies the digital ecosystem model, in the Earth sciences domain.
  • “Geosciences Digital Ecosystem” engineering and interoperability.
  • “Geosciences Digital Ecosystem” value-chain and governance.
  • Application of the “Geosciences Digital Ecosystem” model to implement the SDG agenda.
  • Ethical, fairness, privacy and security challenges and opportunities in applying the “Geosciences Digital Ecosystem” model to Earth sciences.
