Advancing Role of Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure (GKI) in World Economy, Society and Environment

The ‘Geospatial Way’ is the future. It is the most efficient and effective way to collect, process, integrate and utilize information for overall global, national and individual development. Geospatial Knowledge is the result, enabling us to identify, contextualize and understand the many challenges and opportunities facing society within a geographic context. However, realizing the potential of this future state, requires key enablers like partnerships, industry leadership, knowledge sharing and capacity building among others. The prime objective of this special issue is to reckon the relevance and connectivity of geospatial knowledge with the fundamentals of the next generation economy and society and also to project the value proposition of Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure framework for user industry by integrating it in their respective workflows.

Knowledge, not data directly, creates value. The scope of this issue will cover eight user sectors – agriculture, construction and infrastructure, logistics and supply chain, cities, public safety and security, autonomous driving, land administration and energy transition to demonstrate the importance of geospatial technology, applications and knowledge to derive value, be it social, economic or environmental. The journal will also enfold the role of new-age technologies, like Artificial Intelligence, autonomous systems, Internet of Things etc. in helping develop innovative solutions and making them accessible to more users, in more ways than ever. The extensive range of technologies and their trends demonstrated that the adoption of geospatial and the frontier technologies has become increasingly important across all the sectors of economy.

We will be looking for the innovative research and application papers in all the eight user industry sectors mentioned above depicting how Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure can help user industries, thereby moving the geospatial ecosystem closer to users, generating greater value.
