Remote Sensing Applications in Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Accounting
Climate change has become a common crisis all over the world, which directly threatens the survival and development of human society. Accounting terrestrial ecosystem carbon is necessary for improving our ability to understand and predict the role of the terrestrial ecosystem in a changing climate. With the ability to cover large areas in relatively short time, remote sensing has played a vital role during the last several decades in observing the dynamics of terrestrial ecosystem and quantifying the carbon fluxes and stocks. However, carbon accounting with remote sensing technology remains a challenging task in environmental and ecological studies, and more research is needed to reduce the large uncertainties in the current carbon accounting methods. This Special Issue entitled “Remote Sensing Applications in Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Accounting” is dedicated to remote sensing applications in modeling and estimating terrestrial ecosystem carbon dynamics at landscape, regional and global scales. We invite contributions on remote sensing of the terrestrial ecosystem carbon accounting.
The special issue will focus on, but not limited to, the following topics:
• Modelling the terrestrial carbon cycle and the role of terrestrial biosphere in determining carbon pools, fluxes, and processes
• Integrating multi-source remote sensing dataset and modelling approaches to monitor the spatial and temporal variation of terrestrial carbon at regional to global scales
• New methods for estimating terrestrial carbon fluxes and/or stocks/biomass
• Quantifying errors and uncertainties of terrestrial carbon fluxes and/or stocks/ biomass
• New datasets for carbon accounting
• Analysing trends and anomalies in terrestrial ecosystem carbon, including the impact of disturbance events on vegetation activity
