First Generation Supramolecular Chemists
The International Women in Supramolecular Chemistry (WISC) network was launched in November 2019 with a remit to support the retention and progression of women and other marginalized groups. The need to increase diversity in science is well known. Anyone who has one or more marginalized characteristic faces additional barriers to succeed, and these barriers are intersectional. WISC’s first paper set out our ethos of being community-led and embedding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion into our research and programmes. Our second article explored the lived experiences of supramolecular chemists through COVID-19, while our book uses approaches more commonly associated with social sciences to shed light on the human experiences lying behind scientific research.
WISC’s research focus for 2022 is to explore and expose the barriers related to being 1st Generation within the field of supramolecular chemistry. Being 1st Generation into Higher Education means that you are the first in your family to access Higher Education. Alongside research into the lived experiences and perceptions of 1st Generation supramolecular chemists, WISC is aiming to raise awareness of the barriers that face this group, and celebrate their achievements.
This Special Issue is a call for research groups to highlight members of their team, irrespective of gender, who are 1st Generation through the addition of an extended bio to all manuscripts submitted, highlighting how the manuscript author(s) fit this call. It is our hope that through this special issue we can inspire more 1st generation supramolecular chemists to enter and remain within the field of supramolecular chemistry.
