Exploring the Past, Present and Future of Hip Hop
The Howard Journal of Communications is a premier journal that publishes papers focusing on culture and ethnicity, as they interact with communication. One of the most significant cultural phenomena to occur in the last 50 years is the development of Hip Hop culture. Starting in the Bronx in 1973, Hip Hop has become a global movement that has given individuals a chance to confront issues within their communities, share their lived experiences, celebrate their cultures, challenge power structures and artistically express themselves.
In 2023, it is important to capitalize on this moment by creating a special issue that highlights the influence and importance of Hip Hop culture. Whether analyzing issues related to its past or looking forward to what it might be in the future, this special issue is critical to documenting and celebrating the various aspects of Hip Hop culture. With its massive appeal and global influence, the potential of paper topics is vast. What is below is by no means an exhaustive list of ideas, but the following topics offer a general framework to spark ideas and interest.
- Commodification and Hip Hop
- Global/Cultural Impact of Hip Hop
- Rap Music
- Trends and Rap Music/Hip Hop
- Communicating through Street Art and Graffiti
- Hip Hop Feminism
- Hip Hop Culture and Femcees
- Hip Hop and Education
- Hip Hop and Television Representations
- Hip Hop and Podcasting
- Hip Hop and Hollywood Films
- Hip Hop and Politics
- Hip Hop and Afrofuturism
