Equity in Transport

Transport equity ensures that transport systems are fair and inclusive, providing safe, reliable, accessible, and affordable options for all. It's about ensuring everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status or physical ability, has easy access to transport systems. Transport equity is essential to ensure that everybody can reach - and participate in - out-of-home activities (such as work, school, healthcare, etc.), which are important for people’s quality of life and subjective well-being. However, in practice, transport is not equitable, and certain vulnerable population groups often have limited access to good transport services. Additionally, changes in the political environment around the world have introduced a new challenge to conducting research in the area of equity in transport. While incorporating equity in transport planning has been moving fast over the past decade, the fear that such progress will be lost is real. The goal of this special issue is to produce a collection of articles that reviews the state of the art in equity in transport – with an emphasis on studies published in the past decade – and provide guidance to future research. A secondary goal of this special issue is to provide guidance for professionals on how to incorporate equity in transport practice.

This special issue encourages submissions of review articles on (but not limited to) the following topics:

Submission Instructions

Since we want to publish review papers on a wide range of equity-related topics and avoid having two or more papers on similar topics, we will apply a two-step submission process.

First, an abstract (500 to 1000 words) needs to be sent to the editors-in-chief by email (jonas.devos@ucl.ac.uk and ahmed.elgeneidy@mcgill.ca) specifying:

  • the chosen topic,
  • methodology and
  • planned structure of the paper.

Based on a critical review of this abstract, the editors will then invite the authors of eligible abstracts to submit a full review paper. This paper will be reviewed as regular issue papers are and will need to follow the journal’s general guidelines(see Instructions for Authors below). When you are ready to submit a full paper, you will need to do so using the journal's submission portal (see Submit an Article below).

Timeline:

Extended abstract submission: July 15, 2025

Notification of invitation to submit a full article: August 1, 2025

Full paper submission: December 1, 2025

Author notification of first-round reviews: March 1, 2026

Revised paper resubmission: May 1, 2026
