Emerging market finance and trade in the 21st century

Emerging markets have long been a challenge for finance and trade, as standard models may not suit the specific circumstances arising from these markets (Bekaert and Harvey, 2003). However, the interest in emerging markets has been growing, given the increasing importance of emerging markets in the global economy and financial markets, especially during the 21st century. Despite the dramatic globalization during the 21st century, it still makes sense to segregate the world into “emerging” and “developed” market buckets. Nowadays, the issues in emerging markets have become more complex and sophisticated, due to the newly emergence of digital economy, inclusive finance, Covid-19, Russia-Ukraine conflict, geopolitical risk, extreme episodes of international capital flows and exchange rates, energy consumption and environmental concerns, etc.

In light of this, Zhejiang University of Technology is organizing the international conference “Emerging market finance and trade in the 21st century”, calling for original research articles to join in the latest discussion. The conference particularly welcomes research that focuses on the new challenges to the domestic/international finance and trade subjects in emerging markets, especially in the digital economy era. Topics may include but are not limited to:

The consequences of digital inclusive finance in emerging markets

The effects of exchange rate changes in emerging markets

The consequences of geopolitical risk in emerging markets

New challenges to international trade (exports and imports) in emerging markets

New challenges to productivity and happiness in emerging markets

International capital flows to local equity markets in emerging markets

Energy consumption and environmental concerns in emerging markets

Financial stability in the post-Covid-19 era in emerging markets

Spillover of global shocks in emerging markets

New challenges to monetary and fiscal policy in emerging markets
