CALL FOR PAPERS

THE ECONOMICS OF CENTRAL BANKING AND CBDCS

A JOINT SYMPOSIUM IN THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF POLITICAL ECONOMY AND THE REVIEW OF POLITICAL ECONOMY

In April of 2023, the Federal Reserve announced that it was formally looking into the idea of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and whether it would be worthwhile to pursue as public policy. Other countries have already formally adopted CBDCs and corresponding digital coins.  The Federal Reserve states that “CBDC is generally defined as a digital liability of a central bank that is widely available to the general public”.

However, exactly what form and under what financial context the introduction of such an instrument raises many lines of inquiry. Seen from a slightly wider perspective, the whole issue of digital currencies and coins has provided an interesting topic of debate both for academia and society at large since Bitcoin entered into the mainstream conversation in 2012.  A typical starting point of debate is whether a digital coin can be considered money or not.  Another one is exactly what they do, and how that is different or not from other forms of money, such as the digital bookkeeping that currently accounts for the vast majority of monetary transactions.

Ten years on, such debates have offered important reflections on the nature and reality of money, and can hopefully offer some guidance as to the directions in which digital currency is going.

In this context, and in consultation with colleagues, we have decided to issue a joint call for papers between the Review of Political Economy (ROPE) and International Journal of Political Economy (IJPE) on CBDCs.  We will consider papers from any methodological approach, but the object of study must be CBDCs.

To be considered, please send a title and short abstract to either:

Louis-Philippe Rochon (ROPE) at [email protected], or Mario Seccareccia (IJPE) at [email protected], by the date listed.

We will review the abstracts and invite authors we believe best fit the call, no later than May 31, 2024.
