Data Economy and Public Policy

Economic and Political Studies of Renmin University of China and School of Business at Macau University of Science and Technology

October 2022 (October 19–21 or October 26–28) Macao, China

Data, as the oil of the digital era, are shaping the future of humanity. The production, distribution and consumption of data, also known as the data economy, are driving rapid economic advances and creating new social and political dynamics. Data have become a key strategic asset for the creation of value in both private and public sectors. Companies are investing in technology initiatives to start new business models and drive efficiencies in their business. Governments are also eager to leverage data to improve public administration and sustainable development and gain competitive advantages for their countries in international competition.

While the data revolution has the potential to unlock significant value and address serious societal challenges, many concerns have been raised about individuals’ privacy and social trust, about price discrimination and data ownership, about the equitable distribution of gains from data and the bridging of the data divide, and about how to make the full use of data as an instrument for improving public welfare, among other issues.

To address those concerns and foster productive discussions, Economic and Political Studies of Renmin University of China and the School of Business at the Macau University of Science and Technology here jointly call for papers for a conference on “Data Economy and Public Policy”. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Platform economy and new business models
  • Ownership of data
  • Information efficiency and big data
  • Pricing of data, and price discrimination based on big data
  • Regulation of data, involving e.g., the boundary of data usage, the rise of data monopolies, and the governance of cross-border data flows
  • Digital inclusion and sustainable development
  • Data security and informational autonomy
  • Any topics related to digital economy
