Economic Policy research in tourism sustainability and regional development

Although tourism has become one of the main economic activities worldwide, which has generated significant economic impacts, in recent years the need to analyze other aspects such as the environmental and sociocultural impacts generated by tourism has been highlighted. Indeed, there is a widespread view that it is necessary to analyze the sustainability of tourism activity, so it is necessary to take into account not only the economic benefits.

The analysis of this economic activity must take into account that the impacts generated by tourism occur at the regional level, with the exception of some micro-states or island states where they occur at the country level. However, few studies in the scientific literature have focused on analyzing the relationship between tourism sustainability and regional development.

In this context, the proposal of this special issue, taking advantage of this deficit in the scientific literature, presents an opportunity for the publication of articles that analyze the relationship between tourism sustainability and regional development. These papers will allow the generation of knowledge around the development of sustainable tourism, which will allow the development of policies, planning and management tools that allow achieving regional development. The results of these works are undoubtedly useful to the managers of tourist destinations in their search for ways to promote regional development.

As such, we invite you to submit contributions with different innovative elements relating to the relationship between tourism sustainability and regional development.

Suggested topics include (but not limited to):

  • Relationship between tourism, regional development and sustainability.
  • Sustainability in the transformation of tourism into regional development.
  • The economics of sustainable tourism and implications to public policy
  • Environmental impacts on the relationship of tourism with regional development.
  • Tourism and sustainable economic development.
  • Role of sustainable tourism on socio-economic development.
  • Sustainable regional development and public policies.
  • Sustainable tourism indicators.
