How Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected Eastern European Economies? Risks and Opportunities

Subject Coverage and Objectives

In recent years, the world economy has also witnessed a rise in economic uncertainty due to Brexit, the deceleration of growth in the Chinese economy, and US trade policies (begun by President Trump but retained in substantially the same form by President Biden). Currently, advanced and emerging market economies face uncertainties due to the significant effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, emerging market economies have implemented different lockdown and vaccine policies related to COVID-19, and the variety of responses have resulted in variegated impacts of the disease over successive waves.

The primary objective of this special issue is to examine the effects of uncertainty shocks related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Eastern European Economies. We aim to fill the gaps in the empirical literature by including the role of extraordinary events in 2020 and 2021. The quantitative papers, including the data in 2020 and 2021, are particularly welcome.

We welcome empirical papers (panel data studies, survey studies, and time-series analyses), which will focus on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Eastern European Economies. We also welcome policy-based from central banks, governments, and other public institutions in these countries. Besides, the consequences of uncertainty shocks related to the COVID-19 on financial and real estate markets are welcomed.

We expect original, unpublished, and full-length contributions in the following topics.

Topics, which are of interest to this Special Issue include but are not limited to

  • COVID-19 and Asset Prices
  • COVID-19 and Climate Mitigation
  • COVID-19 and Economic Performance
  • COVID-19 and Energy Markets
  • COVID-19 and Exchange Rate Markets
  • COVID-19 and Fiscal and Tax Policies
  • COVID-19 and Globalization Outcomes
  • COVID-19 and Income and Wealth Distribution
  • COVID-19 and Labor Markets
  • COVID-19 and Monetary Policies
