Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the Hospitality and Tourism Discipline

The Journal of Teaching in Travel & Tourism (JTTT) announces a call for papers for a forthcoming special issue focused on the exploration and advancement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the hospitality and tourism discipline. This initiative aims to highlight research, practices, and discussions that foster a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse environment in hospitality and tourism education. While the focus is primarily on education, industry studies that focus on improving the diversity culture through education within the workplace will also be considered.

Themes and Topics of Interest

We welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Increasing Representation: Strategies for enhancing the presence of underrepresented minorities within hospitality and tourism programs.
  • Curriculum Initiatives: Examining DEI initiatives within the educational curriculum, including challenges, best practices, and outcomes.
  • Inclusive Culture: Strategies for creating and sustaining an inclusive culture within hospitality and tourism education programs.
  • Recruitment and Retention: Effective approaches for attracting and retaining minority students.
  • Impact of DEI Initiatives: Assessing the effects of DEI initiatives on student success, program attractiveness, and industry readiness.
  • Cross-cultural Competencies: Promoting global perspectives and cross-cultural competencies in teaching and learning.
  • Leadership in DEI: The role of leadership in advancing diversity and inclusion in education.
  • Innovative Pedagogies: Pedagogical approaches to bolster DEI in classroom and online learning environments.
  • Case Studies: Documentation and analysis of successful DEI initiatives.

Research Encouragement

We encourage the submission of both qualitative and quantitative research to provide comprehensive insights into DEI initiatives and their impact.

This special issue seeks to deepen our understanding and implementation of DEI practices within hospitality and tourism education, preparing students for a diverse global industry. We look forward to receiving your insightful contributions to this important conversation.

Submission Instructions

Manuscript Types and Word Limits

Final manuscripts selected for publication can be submitted as one of the following types:

  • Quantitative or Qualitative Research Paper: Up to 8,000 words.
  • Research Note: Up to 4,000 words.
  • Case Study with teaching note: Up to 5,000 words for case study only.

Submission Procedure

All submitted manuscripts will be assessed by the guest editors who will determine suitability for review at JTTT. The review process is double-anonymized.

  • Abstract Submission: Authors are invited to submit an abstract of up to 500 words in length and should clearly outline the relevance of their study to DEI in hospitality and tourism education. The abstract should include a brief introduction, research questions and/or hypotheses, methods, expected results, and discussions on theoretical contributions and practical implications of the study. The abstract should be submitted through a Qualtrics survey by May 1, 2024. The survey can be accessed here: Submit your abstract. Authors will be notified the result by June 1, 2024.   • Final Manuscript Submission: Selected manuscripts will be submitted through the Taylor & Francis Submission Portal. Submission Guidelines can be found on JTTT homepage.

Timeline

  • Abstract Submission Deadline: May 1, 2024
  • Notification of Selected Abstracts: no later than June 1, 2024
  • Submission of Full Manuscript Due: October 1, 2024
  • Review Process: October through December 2024
  • Publication: 2025
