DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES ON HEALTH AND MEDICINE

Expressions of interest are sought for contributions to a planned special issue of Australian Feminist Studies devoted to the topic of ‘Diverse perspectives on health and medicine’.

We seek contributions from numerous disciplinary perspectives reflecting diverse cultures and populations located within and across different national and regional areas. We particularly welcome feminist engagements with Indigenous health and cultures of the global South, women and girls living with disabilities, refugee and migrant women’s health, women doctors, medical researchers and folk healers, questions including and beyond sexual and reproductive health and rights, medical concepts of gender-specific pathologies, LGBTIQA+ health, ageing and neuro-diverse women.

We welcome contributions from all disciplines concerned with feminism and health or medicine, including but not limited to: health sociology, medical anthropology, medical history, medical ethics, feminist studies of biomedicine, medical humanities, cultural studies of medicine and health, history and philosophy of science, feminist legal studies, politics, geography, film studies, and design.

Potential areas for consideration include but are not limited to:

  • women’s reported experiences of health care discrimination or inequality
  • histories and current practices of genecology and obstetrics
  • transgender medicine and health rights
  • women’s contraceptive technologies
  • hormone replacement therapies
  • women’s ageing health
  • Indigenous women’s health
  • women folk healers
  • LGBTIQA+ health and medical care
  • marginalization of women doctors, midwives, and medical researchers
  • historical exclusion of women as medical research subjects
  • historical and contemporary medical and public health experimentations on women
  • embryo donors, IVF and other reproductive technologies
  • medical care and health of women and girls living with disabilities
  • gender discrimination
