Exploring Recent trends and research trajectories in Digital Twins technology for monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals
Digital twins with detailed geometries with rich semantic and attribute information in urban area, often dealing with big geospatial data involving earth observations, is of high importance for applications in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) monitoring. Among others, digital twins are essential data infrastructure in the applications such as resilient cities, solar cities, smart cities, affordable and clean energy, climate actions, and others. Aiming at providing such geospatial data, numerous algorithms, solutions, and frameworks have been developed in the recent years.
This special issue focuses on collecting advanced developments, innovative methods of modelling/generating digital twins in urban area, for example, semantic segmentation and object detection for city objects from image and/or Lidar point clouds data, the extraction and regularization of polygons as outline of objects for 3D modelling into digital twins. At the same time, new applications where digital twins are required as digital infrastructure for the purpose of SDGs monitoring focused as an example on disaster management, monitoring of climate change impact and/or renewable energy application at neighborhood and building scale, sustainable maintenance contributing to smart cities are more than welcome for this special issue.
Potential topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Applications of digital twins for SDGs monitoring
- Data schema and/or data format of digital twins for urban objects
- Fusion of BIM and City models
- Fusion of multi-monitoring techniques
- Machine/deep learning of remote sensing images and LiDAR point clouds
- 3D city (and BIM) modeling using AI/machine learning technologies
- Simulation and analysis with 3D city models for specific SDGs
- Urban farming and renewable energy simulation using 3D city models
- Mapping and visualizing SDG indicators based on 3D city models
