Comparative Perspectives on the Role of Digital Media in Contentious Politics During Global Crises

The contentious politics of social protest and highly charged partisan politics came to a head within democracies during the COVID-19 crisis, which is reflected in large part on social media. The global pandemic has triggered an urgent need for cooperation by many stakeholders to address problems and reach effective solutions. This special issue asks for one or more of the following questions to be addressed in a submission:

  • How does the use of digital media by governments, politicians, political parties and publics contribute to addressing emergent social problems in the context of contentious and partisan politics?
  • How do affordances of contemporary social media predict partisan engagement and contentious politics in times of global crises?
  • Are there different patterns across media platforms, national or subnational contexts, social or political groups?

In the context of partisan politics, social identity, partisanship, and polarization are important concepts that are likely to vary in form and degree across countries and subnational contexts, that can help or hinder effective political communication in a crisis. These important concepts have inspired numerous studies on the online news environment, given concerns that social media use may exacerbate affective and political polarization. Much of the relevant research was conducted before the emergence of COVID-19, yet it seems polarization was exacerbated during the pandemic, both traditional party polarization and social identity driven affective polarization.

Submission Instructions

We welcome submissions of around 5,000 to 8,000 words maximum, including tables, figures, notes and references.

Authors may submit an extended abstract to the guest editors via email no later than February 1, 2022. By March 1, selected abstracts will be invited to submit full papers by May 4, 2022. Full papers must adhere to the journal’s submission guidelines and should be no longer than 30 pages, inclusive of abstract, tables, references, and figures.

Extended abstracts should consist of no more than 1,000 words (excluding references) and discuss the problem the study will address, the key concepts and theories informing the research, and how the submission will bring a comparative perspective to the topic of digital media and contentious politics in times of global crises. Abstracts should state research questions and hypotheses, methods and data collection procedures, and provide a summary of expected findings.
