Democracy and Race in South Asian Countries: Colonialism, Nationalism and Modern Paradigms

This special issue explores the complex relationship between democracy, race, and the formation of national identities in South Asia. It brings together scholarly contributions that examine how historical legacies and contemporary political developments shape questions of belonging and exclusion in the region.

  • Focuses on the intersection of democracy, race, and national identities in South Asia
  • Examines the impact of colonial legacies on contemporary identity formation
  • Explores how race, caste, religion, and ethnicity shape national belonging
  • Addresses themes such as nationalism, majoritarianism, and democratic transformations
  • Encourages theoretically informed and empirically grounded contributions
  • Covers South Asian countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives
  • Aims to foster comparative and interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue on national identities

Submission Instructions

Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished work that aligns with the theme of the special issue. All submissions will undergo an initial editorial screening followed by the journal’s standard double-blind peer review process.

  • Full-length research articles (approximately 9,000–10,000 words, including references)
  • Conceptual/theoretical papers and empirically grounded studies are both welcome
  • A 250–300 word abstract and a short bio-note (approx. 100 words, including ORCID iD) should be submitted in advance via email to the Guest Editors for initial consideration
  • Only selected abstracts will be invited to submit full manuscripts.
  • Authors must ensure that their submissions clearly engage with the theme of national identities in South Asia
  • Manuscripts should follow the journal’s formatting, referencing, and style requirements
  • During submission, authors should select the relevant special issue title from the submission system
  • The special issue is expected to be published in late 2027/early 2028, subject to successful peer review and journal scheduling
