Dance in the Independent Sector

Every area of the dance field has unique practices, approaches and concerns. This special issue of Dance Education in Practice seeks articles pertaining to the independent sector of dance, formerly referred to as the private sector in some contexts. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

Facilitating change and sustaining growth in the studio environment

Successful studio business practices post COVID

The competition world in the 21st century

Jazz dance and its history and connection to studio dance

Aging out of studio dance…what happens next and transitioning to post-secondary education

Hiring qualified teachers

Choreography for recitals

Range of dance forms and practices offered

Senior dance in the private sector

Non-profit versus for-profit studio models

Internships and pre-service teaching: connections with post secondary institutions

Challenges and successes of rural dance studio settings

We encourage authors with independent sector practices to share their experiences with our readers. You do not need to be an experienced writer to submit—we mentor authors!

Submission Instructions

Dance Education in Practice considers articles for publication focused on practical approaches to dance education and teaching that provide educators with models of new ideas, strategies, and content they can apply to their own practice, targeted toward dance studio teachers, P-12 dance educators, postsecondary teacher education professionals, teaching artists, and dance education undergraduate and graduate students. Articles will be concise (1000-3000 words) and communicate innovative ideas in a "how to" format. Graphics and pictures will support article content.
