Cultural safety for Indigenous Peoples in nursing and midwifery education and practice

This call for papers is for a special themed issue of Contemporary Nurse which will address all areas of research, theory, policy and practice innovations, dedicated to ‘Cultural safety for Indigenous Peoples in nursing and midwifery education and practice’.

The need to ensure that nurses and midwives are providing culturally safe care to Indigenous Peoples is increasingly being written into course accreditation standards, codes of ethics, codes of conduct, professional standards of practice and workplace learning. However, to date there is little evidence of how cultural safety is embedded and evaluated in health education and practice. This special issue aims to disseminate new knowledge in the areas of cultural safety for Indigenous Peoples. Authorship by and with Indigenous nurses and midwives is especially welcomed. We acknowledge that cultural safety has broader community applications, the focus of this special issue is on cultural safety when caring for Indigenous Peoples.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Whole of institution, whole of school, whole of programs and whole of course approaches to developing cultural safety
  • Innovations in embedding Indigenous knowledges into nursing and midwifery curriculum
  • Innovations in assessments and activities that develop cultural safety in nursing and midwifery students
  • Use of innovative teaching frameworks and resources to develop cultural safety
  • Clinical placements for students in Indigenous Health Organisations and Communities
  • Indigenous and non-Indigenous academic collaborations to develop cultural safety
  • Professional development activities designed to improve confidence and capability of academics to teach Indigenous content
  • Collaborating with Indigenous communities to develop cultural safety in students and nurses
  • Evaluation of student or staff cultural safety
  • Development of policies or procedures to ensure cultural safety in practice
  • Provision of opportunities for staff and students to examine their own unconscious bias
  • Barriers and enablers to developing cultural safety

We welcome submission of papers by 30th June 2021 with the targeted publication of the themed issue for 2021.
