CSR CGSS 20th Anniversary Special Issue

Understanding Chinese Social Changes from a Comparative Perspective:

In Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS)

The Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) is the first comprehensive national social survey in China. Jointly Launched in 2003 between Renmin University of China and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, CGSS has observed the Chinese social change for 20 years, during which, China has experienced rapid economic development (rising from the 6th to the 2nd largest economy in the world) and drastic social changes in a variety of areas such as education, family, fertility, gender roles, labor markets, migration, marriage, population structure, and among others. With 12 nationally representative survey data available for public use (2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2021), the CGSS provides valuable resources and opportunities to track social changes for a better understanding of the Chinese society in the first two decades of the 21st century. Moreover, CGSS has initiated the East Asian Social Survey (EASS) in 2006 with other East Asian societies, including South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, and joined the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) in 2007. These collaborations have produced multiple-year data with specific topical modules such as social inequality, health, family, work, culture, nationalism and identity, and globalization, allowing for situating China’s social changes in a broader context. Coming of age CGSS, thus, provides social scientists great opportunities to examine China’s social transformation from a global and comparative perspective.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the CGSS, the Chinese Sociological Review (CSR) invites papers for a special issue on Understanding Social Changes from a Comparative Perspective: in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS). This call invites authors to submit papers that focuses on social changes in China using either multiple waves of CGSS survey data or CGSS special modules collaborating with EASS and/or ISSP. We are interested in empirical studies that adopt a global and comparative perspective or offer multi-disciplinary approaches. Papers that address one or more of the following topics are particularly welcome:

  • Change and continuity of Chinese social structure characterized by hukou and work units;
  • Education expansion and youth’s transition from school to work;
  • The transformation of occupation, work and labor markets;
  • Migration and urbanization;
  • Housing, financialization and wealth inequalities;
  • Technological change, digitalization and social impact;
  • Middle classes and class identity;
  • Globalization, nationalism, and national identity;
  • Social attitude, cultural and value changes;
  • Methods of analyzing repeated cross-sectional survey data.
