"Metaverse": Imagination, Technology and Cultural Consequences

Since the rebranding of Facebook as Meta, Metaverse has aroused great interest from academia and industry. Yet The current discussion of Metaverse presents a sharp contrast between the abundant artistic imagination and poor technological realization. First termed in Neal Stevenson’s science fiction novel Snow Crash published in 1992 (Stevenson, 1992), Metaverse represents a parallel virtual reality universe created from computer graphics, which users from around the world can access. Far from the utopian imagination of a new world of freedom, the current development of Metaverse is either massive multiplayer online video games such as Second Life (Lavocat, 2019) or VR based platforms. Both of them features an out-of-body experience and a cognition model of disembodiment. What kind of the culture consequences would have for the widespread implementation of Metaverse? Can we still imagine a different type of Metaverse that characterize openness, compatibility and pluralism? This special issue will focus on the imagination, technology and cultural consequences of Metaverse. Subjects may explore but are not limited to the following questions:

• Metaverse and Posthuman
• Alternative Metaverses
• Metaverse and Digital Media
• Metaverse and Future Arts
• Metaverse and Aesthetics
• Metaverse and Technology Ethics
• Metaverse and Cognition
