Blockchain Technology for Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a new computational paradigm that makes computer system resources (e.g., networks, servers, applications, storage and computing power) available on demand by the user. The characteristics, especially the convenience and cost reductions, make its applications span multiple fields, such as IT technology, smart grids, intelligent transportation networks, data analytics and social networks. While that benefits and revenues afforded by cloud computing, it also suffers from some new security and efficiency issues. For instance, the centralized architecture raises the single-point failure problem, users’ privacy and data confidentiality often be offended without effective protection. Therefore, it is a great challenge for research communities to solve the existing problems in cloud computing applications. Currently, the blockchain concept is gaining wider attention from not only the Fintech, but also from other technology fields. Due to the natural features such as decentralization, immutability and anonymity of blockchain technology, it is expected to revolutionize and optimize any infrastructure of technologies connected through the internet. In recent years, blockchain-based applications and implementations have grown rapidly in academia and industry, such as cryptocurrency, distributed computing, asset tracking and so on. To date, there is still a lack of method and scheme to solve security problems in cloud computing by using blockchain technology. Therefore, the application of blockchain technology in cloud computing is a big research opportunity. This special issue solicits state-of-the-art technical research that investigates blockchain technology for cloud computing, as well as novel blockchain-based applications addressing privacy preserving features/functionalities in cloud computing.
