Communication and Anxiety
Anxiety plays a strong role in communication both as an input and an output variable. Communication research was first recognized as its own discipline in part due to the importance of understanding anxiety in social interaction. As a key variable in understanding social behavior, anxiety remains a rich area of study for communication scholars.
This special issue of The Review of Communication seeks to explore the intersection of communication and anxiety, welcoming contributions that examine anxiety across various communication contexts (e.g., technology-mediated, interpersonal, organizational, instructional, health) and methodological approaches (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, critical, rhetorical).
We invite original research and comprehensive reviews that align with the journal’s aim to bridge divides, clarify concepts, or contribute to major disciplinary issues. Submissions should demonstrate scholarly rigor while addressing anxiety’s implications for communication theory, research, practice, or pedagogy.
Potential topics for submission include, but are not limited to:
- Communication Apprehension
- Speech Anxiety
- Writing Apprehension / Anxiety
- Listening Anxiety
- Other contexts of anxiety that influence or are influenced by communication
