New challenges to financial stability in the post Covid-19 era

The global financial system has experienced serious disruptions caused by Covid-19 and induced reactions, including national lockdowns and travel bans. Prompt government interventions, massive liquidity injections and asset purchases by central banks have helped to stabilize the situation, but risks emerging from surging public debts, extraordinary low interest rates and assets bubbles increase the chances of another financial crisis occurring.

In addition, Covid-19 has accelerated the digital transformation across the world. Increased attention is paid to the development of the Fintech industry in the aftermath of the pandemic. This includes the rise of central bank digital currencies, cryptocurrencies, decentralized finance and other blockchain-based applications. However, the use of blockchain technology disrupt the traditional financial services and institutions by cutting out the role of intermediaries and making financial services more accessible and efficient, which may introduce a new category of risks and uncertainties to our financial systems. The special issue aims to evaluate the emerging risks and their impacts on financial system in the post Covid-19 era.

Topics may include but not limited to:

  • Modelling and managing of financial risks
  • New database measuring economics and financial consequences of Covid-19
  • Financial contagion and systemic risk spillover effects between financial markets
  • Financial policy uncertainty measurement
  • Effect of climate risk and extreme weather
  • Stress test in financial institutions and financial stability
  • Resistance and resilience of financial institutes from Covid-19
  • Covid-19 and Global Value Chains
  • Green finance and Belt and Road initiatives
  • Environmental taxation and policy
  • Applied machine learning and big data research on financial stability
  • Cryptocurrencies and financial stability
  • Defi applications and blockchain
  • The development of Central Bank Digital Currencies
