Celebration of a Life: Michael McAleer, the Econometrician

The tragic news of Michaelโ€™s passing this July, 2021, has reminded many professional associates and friends of Michael how much we miss him and how much his indefatigable research program and output has affected us and influenced our work. His friendship touched many of us deeply.

Mike served for a very long time as an Associate Editor of Econometric Reviews. He joined the board quite early in my term as Editor in the 1980s and he served with dedication, distinction, and innovation. He was always available for advice and constructive input in all of his assigned cases and he took the initiative in constructing and promoting special issues of the journal. Mike also spearheaded special issues on numerous occasions for other leading journals. In addition, he supported and encouraged a multitude of younger enterprises in many parts of the world.

Mike was also an incredibly supportive scholar for younger researchers and collaborators, especially among his students and colleagues in Asia and Australasia.

A special issue in his honor, and in celebration of his life, would be a proper gesture by Econometric Reviews, and the profession at large. Such a tribute will include papers contributed and submitted by anyone interested in doing so, regardless of the topic. The submitted paper may be a state-of-the-art work in any of the currently topical areas of econometrics. All submitted papers will go through the regular peer review process, much like all of our special issues since 1987, regardless of whether authors are invited to contribute or whether they respond to our general invitation. Accepted papers will be published irrespective of the outcome of this special issue. Coeditors (so far, Robert Taylor and Esfandiar Maasoumi) will write a short introduction and may include any suitable recollections submitted by others (attributed quotes).

It is very much hoped that you will submit a paper with any coauthors of your choice. First with an abstract due before October 15, 2021, followed by a completed paper before December 15, 2021.

We look forward to hearing from you with proposed abstracts and ideas at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Esfandiar Maasoumi and Robert Taylor
Econometric Reviews
