Case Studies in COVID Control

Did you conduct a study to evaluate the effectiveness of controls during the COVID pandemic?  The JOEH is interested in capturing case studies (short-reports, under 3000 words) that describe investigations you performed to help set up controls to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Case studies that would be of interest to our readers include investigations that examined methods to quickly assess ventilation performance, aerosol transport studies in workspaces, flow studies around plexiglass barriers in the workplace, and effectiveness of local HEPA filtration units in shared spaces. While we understand that your case studies may have limited generalizability, particularly given the diversity of workspaces investigated by occupational hygienists, we want to capture these case studies to document methods that may help future assessments.

Manuscripts should be submitted using the JOEH Short Report guidance.  Authors need to clearly state the study’s research question and objective.  We ask that your case study fully explain the workspaces examined (dimensions, anticipated occupancy, pre-COVID ventilation systems) and the methods deployed to perform your assessments.  The methods should be sufficiently clear so that someone could repeat the study you performed (equipment, deployment period, data processing, decision criteria used for assessment).

Because of the urgent nature of control investigations during the response, we understand that there are likely limitations to the interpretation of these results, and we ask authors to clearly identify these limitations in the discussion.  Conclusions should address the decisions made from this case study and guidance and cautions about using this method in other settings.

Reviewers will be asked to comment on the following questions:

  • Are the objective and methods clearly explained?
  • Is the investigation relevant to other work places?
  • Are the limitations sufficient (feedback will advise authors to include other concerns)
  • Is the data analysis appropriate and does the interpretation of findings for the investigated space fit the data generated?

Submission Instructions

Please send an email stating your intent to submit to the editor ([email protected]) to describe your workplace and control being investigated by November 15, 2021.

We ask that authors submit these COVID Control Case studies to the JOEH by December 31, 2021.  Select “Supplemental Issue Only” as the manuscript type. We hope to have reviews and revisions completed by early March to deliver a special focus issue in May 2022, at the latest.  We hope to have between 10 and 15 case studies to complete this special topic issue on COVID Control Case Studies.
