Social Work with Groups

This Special Issue seeks to honor and recognize the significant legacies of Charles D. Garvin (1929-1923), Alex Gitterman (1938-2024), and Andrew Malekoff (1951-2024). In the spirit of a Festschrift, the Special Issue will commemorate their respective lives and work as social workers, group workers, scholars, and educators; their commitments to mentoring new generations of social workers; and their callings to promote individual and social wellbeing and social justice through social work with groups.

The journal is inviting essays, research papers, and practice notes on the theory and practice of social work with groups that analyze and build on the contributions of Dr. Garvin, Dr. Gitterman, and/or Editor-in-Chief Emeritus Andrew Malekoff. In addition, submissions on group work are welcome by authors whose interest in group work research and practice was encouraged and developed through their relationships with the honorees.

Papers should blend theory and practice with vivid stories or examples that bring theoretical concepts to life. Articles of particular interest will explore group work as the means to individual and social change and social justice including:

• Processes of group development and mutual aid with diverse populations
• Cultural, historical, and political contexts of group work
• Trauma-informed group work
• The integration of arts and activities in group work
• The promotion of social justice within and beyond the group.

Submissions may be academic or research papers that range from 15 to 20 pages in length; or practice notes or narratives, ranging from 6 to 8 pages, that illustrate a group work concept or principle through practice experience.

Submissions must conform to Social Work with Groups Instructions for Authors that appear in the Journal on the Taylor and Francis website. Word documents are preferred. All submissions must be made through the online journal portal.
