Bioconvergence – the Future of Heath and Biotechnology

Currently, borders between engineering, technology, biology & microbiology, information technology and social & cognitive sciences are becoming increasingly blurred. What we’re witnessing is a new paradigm that harmonizes different scientific fields, namely bioconvergence.

Biocovergance recognises that “biology is just engineering that’s been refined over billions of years”, but biological processes far surpass any human inventions today. Therefore, there is a need to leverage synergies between biology and technology to enable fundamental discoveries, science translation and implementation. Today, bioconvergence is the end-to-end enabler that drives the innovation in biomedicine and biotechnology to tackle unmet clinical needs such as multidrug resistance, effective treatments for dementia, blindness, or shortage of organ transplants.

Bioconvergence is the future of BioMedTech and healthcare sectors, a future that promises targeted, personalized treatment, cures for currently incurable diseases, and hope for a healthier and more sustainable future.

Here, we feature a collection of thought-leading articles that demonstrate that bioconvergence offers real solutions to unmet needs. This collection specifically covers key topics such as: bioautomation, biomanufacturing & bioprinting, nano- and biobots, inter- and multidisciplinary science, AI-enabled biomanufacturing, bioprocessing and therapeutics discovery, including high-speed innovation, micro-physiological systems & animal-free innovation, hybrid biosensors, as well as optogenetics, and engineered “living” biomaterials.
