Production and Application of Biochar to Underpin Select Sustainable Development Goals

Biochar has recognisable potential to address several contemporary challenges including inimical climate change, land contamination, waste production and decreasing agronomic output relative to increasing global population (Ennis et al. 2012). Identified as a viable technology in some national policy statements to address the COP21 agenda, biochar has explicit relevance to achieve and fulfil key targets within UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Climate Action. Biochar is produced through pyrolysis of organic materials, often wastes, hence any sustainability initiatives that are based on this technology can and should be implemented parallel to the current pressing agendas related to CoVid-19 management. This Special Issue invites original research, critical reviews, mini-reviews, perspectives and letters on topics including but not limited to biochar as a vehicle for waste minimization and exploitation, (bio)remediation and enhanced food production. Also, we welcome reports on elucidating the mechanisms that underpin biochar’s efficacy, investigations into the use of the material to augment animal feeds and its application as a biofilm substrate in bioreactors, e.g. biofilters, anaerobic digestors (Kaur et al., 2020).
