Big Earth Data and Air Pollution

Air pollutants have great influence on climate change and air quality, and they can also cause great harm to human health and significantly increase the risk of death. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that a large proportion of the world's population lives in areas where air pollution levels exceed national limits, especially in densely populated developing countries, where millions of pre-mature mortalities occur every year as a result. As air pollution has strong spatiotemporal variabilities, high-quality air pollution datasets with high resolutions are urgently needed for use in studies on air pollution and environmental health. Because of the combined effects of natural and anthropogenic influence to air pollution, the monitoring of air quality is becoming more challenging.

Big data can help to solve these problems by mining valuable information from rich data sources including geographic data, ground-based observations, satellite remote sensing data, and model simulations. In this way, a better understanding of the environment in which humans live can be gained. This Special Issue will present new and advanced scientific contributions related to air pollution that make use of Big Earth Data.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Reviews of studies related to air pollution
  • Air pollution monitoring and modeling
  • Air pollution dataset generation and validation
  • Surface, satellite, and model data fusion techniques
  • Impacts of air pollution on climate, environment, and human health
  • Long-term reanalysis of air pollution datasets and applications
