The Applied Economics of ESG

Submissions are invited for a special issue of Applied Economics focusing on ESG performance, investment, and assessment. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing entails utilizing criteria to assess a firm's behaviour, embraced by socially conscious investors to evaluate potential investments. Environmental criteria evaluate a company's environmental stewardship, encompassing policies addressing climate change, among other factors. Social criteria scrutinize how a company manages relationships with stakeholders such as employees, suppliers, customers, and local communities. Governance considerations involve leadership, executive compensation, external and internal audits, internal controls, and shareholder rights. In recent years, a growing number of investors has used ESG criteria in investment decisions. We encourage the submission of high-quality research that advances our comprehension of the applied economics of this trend. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The real effects of ESG considerations on firm behaviour
  • Financial implications of ESG investment and its contribution to value generation
  • Impact of ESG information on decision-making processes within capital markets
  • Challenges related to ESG measurement and ratings
  • The link between ESG performance and firms’ exposure to risk
  • Stakeholder engagement and its influence on ESG practices
  • The role of supply chain management in enhancing ESG performance
  • ESG considerations in mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures
  • Exploration of other pertinent topics in the applied economics of ESG performance and practices

We look forward to receiving submissions that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this critical area. Applied Economics is a peer-reviewed journal encouraging the application of economic analysis and particularly fosters quantitative and empirical studies, the results of which are of use in the practical and policy fields. Submissions should therefore report research that is empirical and quantitatively rigorous.
