Applications of Spatial Econometrics in Economic and Social Fields

Over the past few decades, urbanization and regionalization processes have accelerated, leading to a growing interest in spatial economics and spatial statistics as important research fields in the economic and social fields (Leiva et al., 2020). In this context, spatial econometrics has emerged as an effective tool for handling spatial data, and has gained increasing attention and application among scholars. By incorporating spatial factors into models, spatial econometrics can better reveal the impact of spatial structures on economic and social phenomena, and provide more accurate foundations for policy-making and planning decisions (Motamed et al., 2014; Civelli et al., 2018).

The spatial dimension plays an essential role in various economic and social phenomena, such as urbanization, regional development, land use, environmental economics, social networks, population migration, health, education, public policy, urban planning, and decision analysis, among others (Kelejian et al., 2013; Shi and Xi, 2018; Emediegwu et al., 2022). Therefore, understanding the spatial dimension and its effects is crucial for analyzing and addressing economic and social challenges. Moreover, the importance of spatial econometrics has been recognized by scholars and policymakers, and the field has grown rapidly in recent years (Gibson et al., 2023). However, many questions and challenges still remain, including the development of new methods to analyse spatial data, the application of existing methods in new areas, and the integration of spatial econometrics with other relevant fields.

Submission Instructions

Against this backdrop, this special issue aims to promote the application of spatial econometrics in the economic and social domains, and to advance research in spatial economics and spatial statistics. We welcome scholars and researchers to submit original and innovative research papers covering but not limited to the following topics:

  • The application of spatial econometric methods in areas such as urbanization, regional development, land use, energy economics, and environmental economics;
  • The application of spatial econometric methods in areas such as social networks, population migration, health, and education;
  • The application of spatial econometric methods in areas such as public policy, urban planning, and decision analysis;
  • The application of spatial econometric methods in areas such as international trade, financial markets, and industrial organization.

Papers can be theoretical studies or based on empirical data. We also welcome interdisciplinary research, particularly in fields related to geographic information systems, remote sensing technology, and machine learning.
