Applications of AI in Computational Modelling in Medical and Life Sciences

Dear colleagues,

One of the disciplines that has greatly benefited from the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is healthcare and medicine, with transformed predictive capabilities in areas such as disease diagnosis, personalised medicine, drug discovery and many more. An area that has gained significant traction of late is the adoption of AI in computational modelling, where techniques such as machine learning (for e.g., artificial neural network and deep neural network), deep learning (for e.g., convolution neural network (CNN) and neural operator learning (NOL)) and hybrid techniques, such as physics-informed neural network (PINN) continue to be developed. In healthcare and medicine, the integration of AI into computational models of biophysical and physiological systems offers numerous benefits, such as parameter estimation, improved computational accuracy and the ability to integrate data at multi-scales. Despite the well-documented benefits, there are concerns regarding the accuracy and efficacy of these AI-powered models, particularly in healthcare and medicine.

This Special Issue of Mathematics in Medical and Life Sciences1 invites original research articles, review or short commentary/opinion pieces on the integration of AI in computational modelling2 with application in healthcare and medicine. We welcome high-quality original research articles and review including, but not limited to the following areas of research or review:

  • Adoption of computational modelling to generate synthetic data for AI model training
  • Development/application of AI models that integrate synthetic data training
  • Application of AI in computational modelling of problems related to healthcare and medicine
  • Integration of simulation models, machine learning and statistics
  • Inverse problems in healthcare and medicine
  • Digital twins and AI in healthcare and medicine
  • Hybrid models integrating AI and simulation models
  • Applications of the above methodologies to practical problems

Notes:

1Mathematics in Medical and Life Sciences is an open access, international journal publishing original research and reviews in mathematics, statistics, computational biology and computational engineering with domain relevance to current questions and challenges at the cutting edges of medicine, biology or the life sciences. Please note article processing charges (APCs) are waived for all submissions to this journal in 2024.

2Manuscripts focused on data analysis through the application of AI without mathematical modelling are outside of the scope of this special issue, however any contributions within journal remit will be given full consideration as regular articles.

Sincerely yours
